MIZZEN MAST RETIRES TO JUDDMONTE FARMS
Juddmonte Farms announced that stakes record setter Mizzen Mast,
a Juddmonte homebred and Grade 1 winner on dirt will stand the 2003
breeding season at Juddmonte Farms in Lexington, Kentucky.
Mizzen Mast was a group winner in Europe prior to being
transferred to Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel’s barn. Under
Frankel’s care, Mizzen Mast emerged as one of the leading handicap
horses on the West Coast having captured two legs of the Strub
series by winning the Grade 1 Malibu at 7 furlongs by 2 ½ lengths
as well as the Strub Stakes in stakes record time winning by 4
lengths. Mizzen Mast defeated the Gr.1 winners Orientate, Scorpion
and Yonaguska.
“This is a really good horse,” Frankel said. “With the depth of
talent he showed me, I think he could have won the Breeders’ Cup
Juvenile and the Kentucky Derby.” Kent Desormeaux described his
ride in the Malibu by saying, “When I asked him to run he popped a
wheelie he took off so fast.”
Mizzen Mast represents the best of his distinguished parentage.
His sire Cozzene has sired Breeders’ Cup winners on both dirt and
turf. Cozzene’s sire, Caro, is the broodmare sire of the top young
stallions Maria’s Mon (G1) and Unbridled’s Song (G1). Mizzen Mast’s
dam Kinema was a $2.2 million yearling and his second dam Mrs.
Peterkin produced Sweet Alliance, who won the Kentucky Oaks.
His stud fee is $15,000.
