DISTANT VIEW CONTINUED SUMMER SUCCESS
Tantina, a three-year-old daughter of Distant View out of Didina
by Nashwan, maintained her unbeaten record with an impressive
performance in the Listed Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood in England.
The filly made a front-running performance under a hand ride from
jockey Richard Hughes, quickening nicely to hold rival Gonfilia in
the closing stages.
After winning a maiden race on July 3rd, she looked a class act
when winning an allowance race on July 24th. “I’ve had her just
under three months,” said her trainer Barry Hills. “She ought to
improve a bit as the autumn goes on and go for something like the
Gr.2 Challenge Stakes [at Newmarket on October 18] or the Gr.1 Prix
de la Foret [at Longchamp October 12] over her ideal trip of seven
furlongs. [Tantina] has a very high cruising speed and a lot of
early pace.”
The day before Tantina won the Oak Tree Stakes, Distant View had
an impressive two-year-old maiden winner named Ithaca, out of the
Nureyev mare Reams of Verse. She was sent off the 2-1 favorite in
the Goodwood race. She stalked the early pace on the rail. Hemmed
in there early in the straight, she was switched four wide by
jockey Richard Quinn and quickened to lead with 1 ½ furlongs
remaining. Sprinting clear under a hand ride, she won by five
lengths. Ladbrokes quoted her at odds of 20-1 for next year’s Gr.1
1,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May. Trainer Henry Cecil said, “I
hadn’t been very hard on her so I think she’ll improve as she’s
very green. She has the potential to be quite a nice
filly.”
