DAM OF DANEHILL PASSES AWAY

There was a sad event at Juddmonte Farms, Kentucky over the weekend, when the highly-influential broodmare Razyana died after foaling a Distant View colt.

Razyana, who was out of a half-sister to Northern Dancer, was trained by Jeremy Tree and ran three times. Although she failed to win, she put up a good performance on her debut when finishing second to the future Chester Vase winner Alleging.

Sent to Danzig for her first season at stud, Razyana made the best possible start, as the result of this union was Danehill. The winner of four races, Danehill was placed in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket (third to Nashwan) and the Irish equivalent before finding success at shorter distances. Danehill was crowned Champion Three Year Old Sprinter in Europe after winning the Haydock Park Sprint Cup and was later to become a highly successful stallion – in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere.

Razyana went on to compile an impressive stud record, producing six further black type performers.  The best of these were the Danzig colts Eagle Eyed and Shibboleth, who became Grade Two and Grade Three winners respectively, and the filly Harpia (also by Danzig), who won the Grade Three Shirley Jones Handicap.

With six descendents of Razyana still in the Juddmonte broodmare band, as well as two of her daughters currently in training with Andre Fabre – a Distant View three year-old called Far Shores and a Danzig two-year-old, it is unlikely that Razyana’s influence in the success of Juddmonte  Farms will diminish in the near future.
