Grade 1 winner and 2002 Broodmare of the Year Toussaud gave
birth to an A.P.Indy filly on May 5 at owner-breeder Khalid
Abdullah's Juddmonte Farms near Lexington.
Farm Manager Garrett O'Rourke said both Toussaud and the filly
are doing well.
"It's always been touch and go with her when she foals because
she's had colic surgery and laminitis in the past, but everything
went smoothly this time," O'Rourke said. "The foal is healthy and a
very good looking foal, too. I'm looking for a little piece of wood
to touch as I speak."
The filly was placed with a nurse mare, since Toussaud is too
fragile physically to raise her own foals.
"We waited about two or three days," O'Rourke said. "She loves
the foal, but in the past, she gets two or three weeks out and
that's when she starts having complications. it's too much stress
on her system to raise a foal. The last five or so foals have been
raised by nurse mares."
Toussaud, a 15 year old daughter of El Gran Senor out of Image
of Reality, by In Reality, has produced five graded stakes winners
from six starters, including 2003 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Empire
Maker; Grade 1 winners Chester House, Chiselling, and Honest Lady;
and Grace 2 winner Decarchy. She has an unraced two year old filly
by Seeking The Gold, named Tolerance, and a yearling filly by
Kingmambo.
