CACIQUE MAINTAINS FINE FAMILY TRADITION
Juddmonte’s Cacique became the fourth Gr.1
winner produced by the exceptional broodmare Hasili
(Kahyasi) when landing Saturday’s Gr.1 Manhattan Handicap on the
Belmont Stakes card.
He led home an Irish-bred 1-2-3, holding off the determined late
challenge of Relaxed Gesture (Indian
Ridge), who lost out in close finish to the race for the second
year running. Irish Derby hero Grey Swallow (Daylami) was close
behind in third.
A Gr.2 and dual Gr.3 winner in France for Andre Fabre, the
five-year-old was making his third start in the States, having
finished runner-up in to Manhattan fourth English Channel (Smart
Strike) in last month’s Gr.1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at
Churchill Downs and fourth in the Gr.1 Frank E Kilroe Mile Handicap
at Santa Anita on his American debut. He may now head for the Gr.1
Arlington Million on 12th August.
Cacique was following in the footsteps of his fullsisters Banks
Hill and Intercontinental, who both also
triumphed at the highest level on the Belmont Park turf. They are
full-siblings to Gr.2 victor and Banstead Manor resident Dansili,
while Hasili is also the dam of the dual Gr.1 victrix Heat Haze
(Green Desert).
An excellent weekend for Juddmonte homebreds continued yesterday
when Barathea’s son Apsis
captured the Gr.3 Prix du Chemin de Fer du Nord at the Prix de
Diane meeting by three-parts of a length, with another Juddmonte
homebred, Early March (DANSILI), in third.
