STALLION ROUNDUP
Trainer Bret Calhoun hopes he has a future
Triple Crown competitor in Makeithapencaptain
(APTITUDE), a
two-year-old colt with two wins in three career starts.
“We’re excited,” Calhoun said. “He’s passing tests and we think he
could be good enough to compete at the highest level. It will be
fun to find out.”
After finishing third in his racing debut on September 10, Robert
Beck’s Makeithapencaptain earned back-to-back victories at the
suburban Chicago track by a combined 25 lengths. The dark bay or
brown
colt won a maiden race by 83⁄4 lengths on October 14 then crushed
four juvenile foes by 161⁄4 lengths in an allowance/optional
claiming race while stretching out to 11⁄16 miles for the first
time on November 29.
“He wasn’t stressed at all and was very comfortable all the way
around,” Calhoun said. “After the race he acted like he could go
around again. We expected him to win big, but not quite like
that.”
Calhoun expects Makeithapencaptain to make his stakes debut in the
$100,000 Lecomte Stakes (G3), a one-mile race at Fair Grounds on
January 13.
Tropical Light, son of MIZZEN
MAST, won the Hyogo Junior Grand Prix Gr.3 on
November 23, 2006 by an impressive 4 lengths. This 2 year old
has been making headlines in Japan since breaking his maiden
earlier in the year by 8 lengths in a time that was fractions off
of the track record.
