EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR MIZZEN MAST
MIZZEN
MAST (Ky): Caro is having a much bigger impact
these days than maybe people realize, mostly on the female side,
but his best sire son, GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Cozzene,
already has a successful sire son in Alphabet Soup, and this horse
could be a really big name, too. He was a Group 3 winner (Group 1
placed) when trained by Criquette Head-Maarek in France, but,
oddly, had to have firm turf.
He evidently hated it soft, and when it rained and turned the
course yielding at Arlington Park for
the GI Secretariat, he floundered. When Bobby Frankel switched him
to the dirt, it was awesome: he
won the GI Malibu in his first start on dirt, then came back in
February 2002 to score a four-length win in the GII Charles H.
Strub, running a Beyer 119 (about a Timeform 131). You can bet
Prince Khalid has bred some top mares to him, too. The Budweiser
Longshot.
