MIZZEN MAST IS THE LEADING SECOND CROP SIRE BY
MEDIAN
By Eric Mitchell
Sires represented by their second juvenile crop at this year's
select 2-year-olds in training sales had the only triple-digit rate
of return (ROR) among sires with four juvenile crops or less in
2007. In addition, these sires had the highest return of any
comparable class for the past four years. The 152% ROR generated by
the second-crop sires is the highest seen among stallions since the
successful juvenile sale season of 2004. As part of an annual
review of the select 2-year-old market, The Blood-Horse MarketWatch
breaks out statistics by crop for sires with four juvenile crops or
less.
Leading the second-crop sires by median is MIZZEN
MAST. Juvenile pinhooks by the son of
Cozzene brought a median price of $290,000 for five sold,
which is an increase of 222% over his first crop's median of
$90,000 (four sold). The Juddmonte Farms stallion is tied
with Forest Wildcat for ninth among all sires by median. By
percentage profitable, MIZZEN
MAST ranks third (among sires with a
minimum of three pinhooks sold) with 80%, tied with
second-crop sire, Street Cry. MIZZEN
MAST is the fifth leading sire by ROR
in this year's study, with 242%.
