JUDDMONTE RETURNS TO THE THOROUGHBRED TIMES TOP
TEN
Thoroughbred Times – Industry Leading Owners of 2006.
By Frank Angst
With its talented stable of homebreds, Juddmonte Farms returned
to the Thoroughbred Times top ten list of leading owners in 2006
thanks to a stable that displayed impressive depth and
versatility.
Despite Intercontinental (GB) registering a victory in the 2005
Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1), Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte
fell out of the top ten Thoroughbred Times list where it was ranked
sixth in ’04. In 2006 the six-time Eclipse Award winner as either
outstanding owner or breeder came roaring back with a deep stable
of runners that were bred in both Kentucky and Europe.
The stable’s leading scorer, CACIQUE (Ire), won the Man O’ War Stakes (G1) and
the Manhattan Handicap (G1) on the turf at Belmont Park. By
Danehill, CACIQUE is out of Juddmonte
blue hen Kahyasi mare Hasili (Ire), honoured in England as the
Thoroughbred Breeders Association broodmare of the year 2006.
CACIQUE was not the only North
American Grade 1 winner with ties to Hasili. Price Tag (GB) – a
daughter of Hasili’s son DANSILI
(GB) – won the 2006 Matriarch Stakes at Hollywood Park in her North
American debut for Juddmonte.
Abdullah, 69, is a member of the ruling family of Saudi Arabia
and purchased his first Thoroughbreds in 1977. He appears poised
for another top season in 2007 as Latent Heat won the San Carlos
Handicap (G2) on February 17 at Santa Anita Park after closing out
the ’06 season there with a victory in the Malibu Stakes (G1).
In 2006, Juddmonte registered top-15 finishes on the lists of
leading owners by earnings, average earnings per starter, and
percentage of stakes winners from starters.
Juddmonte earned the Eclipse Award as outstanding breeder each
year from 2001 to ’03 and in 1995. Juddmonte also earned the
Eclipse Award as outstanding owner in 1992 and
2003.
