Henry Cecil finally had his first Breeders’ Cup winner when Midday (OASIS DREAM) squeezed past the front-running fellow Juddmonte runner to land the Gr.1 Filly and Mare Turf.
The Gr.1 Nassau Stakes heroine made a forward move before half way but jockey Tom Queally was hard at work as they approached the final turn. However, the daughter of OASIS DREAM responded well to take the lead in the home straight and held off the fast-finishing pair Pure Clan (Pure Prize) and last year’s winner Forever Together (Belong To Me).
After the race, Cecil commented, “The main thing was to have a nice position and, when she hit the straight, she could go for home. But after my first runner [Father Time], whom I really fancied, didn’t run very well I was just wondering what was going to happen.”
Owner Khalid Abdulla confirmed that the filly will stay in training next year, saying, “She will go back to Europe next year and she will continue.”
Ventura (Chester House) was strongly fancied to notch up a quickfire double for Juddmonte and, although she was held up for her usual late run, found that Informed Decision had gone beyond recall and she could only get to within about a length of her.
Augustin Stables’ grey daughter of Monarchos, a yearling and two-year-old graduate of Fasig-Tipton sales, had beaten Ventura by a head in the Vinery Madison Stakes in April, one of her two previous Gr.1 wins this season.
