MAY DAY, MAY DAY
The success of May foals has been in the news recently – with the revelation that the first two finishers in the Kentucky Derby were born in that month. Interestingly, many of Juddmonte’s best racehorses were also May foals – ten of Juddmonte’s 76 individual homebred Group/Grade One winners in fact.
AFRICAN ROSE (Observatory/New Orchid) Sprint Cup, Doncaster.
ALL AT SEA (Riverman/Lost Virtue) Prix du Moulin, Longchamp. Grandam of recent Pretty Polly Stakes winner Take The Hint.
CACIQUE (Danehill/Hasili) Manhattan Handicap, Belmont Park and Man O’War Stakes, Belmont Park.
COMMANDER IN CHIEF (Dancing Brave/Slightly Dangerous) Derby Stakes, Epsom and Irish Derby, Curragh.
DISTANT VIEW (Mr Prospector/Seven Springs) Sussex Stakes, Goodwood.
PROPHECY (Warning/Andaleeb) Cheveley Park Stakes, Newmarket. Dam of Gr.2 winner Modern Look (by Zamindar) and grandam of promising first season sire Camacho.
SLEEP EASY (Seattle Slew/Dokki) Hollywood Oaks, Hollywood Park.
TINNERS WAY (Secretariat/Devon Diva) Californian Stakes, Hollywood Park and Pacific Classic, Del Mar (twice).
TOUSSAUD (El Gran Senor/Image Of Reality) Gamely Handicap, Hollywood Park. Broodmare of the Year and dam of GR1 winners Empire Maker, Chester House, Honest Lady (dam of Gr.1 winner and new US Juddmonte sire First Defence) and Chiselling.
YASHMAK (Danzig/Slightly Dangerous) Flower Bowl Invitational Handicap, Belmont Park
Juddmonte Stallions also have some notable May-foaled representatives. Observatory has the aforementioned African Rose, while Oasis Dream is responsible for the multiple Group winning filly Visit. Dansili has five May-foaled Stakes winners, headed by the brilliant two-year-old and young sire Strategic Prince and Gr.3 winner/Classic placed Famous Name. Beat Hollow’s unbeaten Italian Listed winner Riario was a May foal, as was Rainbow Quest’s Irish 2000 Guineas winner Spectrum.
