EMPIRE MAKER FILLY WINS THIRD STRAIGHT
Article taken from the TDN online.
Acronym (EMPIRE MAKER), fifth on debut down the hill at Santa Anita Dec. 27, scored over Pro-Ride at that venue Jan. 23 when stretched out to a mile. The full-sister to Turn Away and half to Averted View (Distant View), she was freshened and sent East, where she came back in a seven-furlong Sept. 4 allowance at Saratoga. Away last after she squeezed at the start, the homebred rolled into contention on the far turn and powered clear under a drive to register a 6 1/4-length victory.
The bay would go off as the 1-2 favorite here off that powerful performance. Unhurried in fifth through the opening panel, Acronym (EMPIRE MAKER) made smooth headway on the turn and assumed a narrow lead at the top of the stretch. Honest to Betsy (Yonaguska) briefly drew even before the market leader rebuffed that challenge and edged clear to defeat that foe by 3 1/4 lengths. Song of Solomon (Unbridled's Song), blocked at the quarter pole, lacked the needed rally after she found room and finished an additional 1 1/2 lengths back in third.
