MIZZEN MAST COMING GOOD IN THE LONG RUN
The 1¾ mile San Juan Capistrano Handicap (gr. II) was once one of America’s great races, but it’s gone the way of all other American contests over a distance of ground, either shortened or downgraded. That said, it still paid out a nice $150,000 to winner, Midships. He is a member of the first crop of Mizzen Mast, who is enjoying a very good season, with five stakes winners to date this year, including another graded winner, Jiboom. Incidentally, Mizzen Mast is turning out to be a very good cross for Northern Dancer. Midships, who is rated A++ by TrueNicks, is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare, and Mizzen Mast also has stakes winners out of mares by Deputy Minister, Danzig, Storm Cat, Nureyev and Sea Hero, which represent a pretty fair cross section of the Northern Dancer line.
