Juddmonte Farms’ CHAMPS ELYSEES became the late Bobby Frankel’s final champion when he was named Canada’s 2009 Horse of the Year at the Sovereign Awards ceremony in Toronto on Friday night.
The son of Danehill, who is shortly to start his stallion career at Banstead Manor Stud at a fee of £10,000, is the first US-trained winner of the main award since 1995, having been required to start at least three times in Canada.
In 2009, he ran there on four occasions, winning their most valuable race, the Gr.1 Canadian International, and was placed three times. The full-brother to leading sire DANSILI retired with six wins and $2,931,818 in earnings.
