Clear Sailing (EMPIRE MAKER) made one juvenile appearance for her breeder while under the care of trainer Dallas Stewart, finishing third to Ocean Colors (Orientate) in the performance that made that filly a “TDN Rising Star” at Churchill Downs in June 2008.
With a string of excellent breezes under her belt, Clear Sailing went under the hammer as part of the Overbrook dispersal at Keeneland November, the bay-out of a 3/4-sister to GSW & GISP Jump Start (A.P. Indy)-was snapped up for $255,000 by Larry Richardson, agent for Keith and Ginger Myers’ Coteau Grove Farms.
Clear Sailing validated that pricetag in her first start for her new connections, storming home by 4 1/4 lengths Dec. 28 and made it two straight with a pacesetting 8 3/4-length success in a two-turn allowance Jan. 17.
Employing far different tactics this time around, Clear Sailing was ridden from the tail of the field by Shane Sellers as Fighter Wing (EMPIRE MAKER) had things her own way up front. That longshot still held the call after six furlongs in a pedestrian 1:14.20, but Clear Sailing quickened past odds-on War Echo at the eighth pole and caught a stubborn Fighter Wing in the waning strides.
