Acting Happy (EMPIRE MAKER) had run into a pair of “TDN Rising Stars” in her last two starts, finishing second behind Christine Daae (Giant’s Causeway) in a Gulfstream allowance Feb. 28, and filling out the exacta behind Streaker (Forest Wildcat) in a similar test in Hallandale Mar. 27.
The dark bay was overlooked at 10-1 in her stakes bow, yesterday’s Gr.2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico, but she wasn’t watching the tote board. Up to press Khancord Kid (Lemon Drop Kid) through six panels in 1:11.43, Acting Happy (EMPIRE MAKER) came between horses at the top of the lane to get the lead, and was not threatened as No Such Word (Canadian Frontier) closed late.
“Just because this track has been favoring speed today, I said, ‘Jockey [Jose Lezcano], let’s give her a little incentive early on. I don’t want you to send her, but let’s just put her in the game,” explained trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. “As long as she stays sound, that’s exactly what’s going to keep happening with her.”
