Racing around two turns for the first time, Clear Sailing (EMPIRE MAKER) controlled a slow pace and cruised to a 8 ¾-length allowance victory on Sunday at the Fair Grounds.
Jockey Shane Sellers was gearing her down in the final furlong as she completed a mile and 40 yards in 1:42.69.
The filly, trained by Glenn Delahoussaye for Keith and Ginger Myers’ Coteau Grove Farms, was coming off a 4 ¼-length rout of maidens Dec. 28 in her second start. She was purchased for $255,000 in November at Keeneland in the Overbrook Farm dispersal sale.
A 4-year-old daughter of EMPIRE MAKER and the Old Trieste mare Steady Course, Clear Sailing is headed to stakes company, Delahoussaye said.
“This race was to see if she’s ready for the Pelleteri,’’ he said. “We’re going to use that as a steppingstone to the New Orleans Ladies.’’
Sellers said: “She’s got the ability to be any kind of horse.’’
