SOARING EMPIRE (c, 3, EMPIRE MAKER - Flying Passage, by A.P. Indy), a $190,000 Keeneland September yearling, was a debut winner at Monmouth Park Sept. 26, then placed third in the Gr.3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs Nov. 1.

Given a 4-1 chance in his sophomore debut here, he stayed within striking distance while seventh through a half-mile in :45.83. With Eddie Castro aboard, he made a wide-sweeping move on the turn for home and came with a sustained rally to deliver a 3/4-length tally over Allez Reef (Indian Ocean). Latigo Shore (Malibu Moon) faded to finish eighth.
