With Jim Rome and the rest of her owners on hand, Mizdirection worked an aggressive :59 seconds flat to earn the bullet work on turf on a glorious Saturday morning at Santa Anita Park. The four-year-old daughter of MIZZEN MAST is pointing to return off a five-month layoff in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (Grade 1) on November 3.
Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith was in the irons for the final of a string of nine works leading up to Mizdirection's first try in a Grade I event. Earlier this year, she won the Monrovia Stakes (G3) over the same 6 1/2-furlong downhill turf course that the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint will be competed over.
Last summer at Del Mar, Mizdirection gave Rome his first stakes win as a horse owner when she captured the Sandy Blue Handicap at Del Mar.
Through 11 career starts for trainer Mike Puype, Mizdirection has six wins, four runner-up finishes and a third-place effort with career earnings just shy of $375,000.
Along with the rest of the racing world, @jimrome has gotten caught up in the excitement leading up to the richest event in sports by Tweeting about Mizdirection's Breeders' Cup race and using the hash tag #BC12.
On thoroughbred racing's championship day, Mizdirection faces a tough field of primarily males, with the likely favorite Bridgetown entering off a pair of wins sprinting on turf and boasting 14 exacta finishes from 19 career starts on turf.
Three years after winning the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint coming down the hill at Santa Anita, California Flag tries again also coming off a long layoff. The now eight-year-old son of Avenue of Flags was last seen in April while winning the San Simeon Handicap (G3) to run his record to five wins in seven starts over this unique turf sprint layout.
