A CROSS THAT BREEDERS SHOULD TAKE NOTE OF

By Clive Webb-Carter

Taken from bloodstock.racingpost.com:

Juddmonte's breeding and stallion operation enjoyed a particularly fruitful day on Saturday 26th May when not only did it have four home-bred stakes winners but its sire OASIS DREAM celebrated a first Classic winner when Power won the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Juddmonte's Saturday stakes winners saw Bated Breath (DANSILI) win the Gr.2 Temple Stakes, Emulous (also DANSILI) take the Gr.3 Equestrian Stakes  at the Curragh, while Sea Moon (Beat Hollow) and Jet Away (Cape Cross) win at Listed level at Goodwood.

What is particularly striking is that Bated Breath (pictured right) and Emulous are not only both by DANSILI but also both out of daughters of Distant View (Mr Prospector).

That cross has produced four stakes winners to date, all of them Juddmonte home-breds. The first of these was Daring Diva who won the Listed Criterium de Vitesse at Chantilly in 2005, followed by Zacinto, who in 2009 won the Gr.2 Celebration Mile due to Delegator (also by DANSILI) being disqualified at a later date.

The following year saw Daring Diva's elder own-sister Emulous win the first of her six stakes races in the Gr.3 Concorde Stakes. She went on to win last year's Gr.1 Matron Stakes.

Distant View mares offer, to my eyes, an interesting cross for DANSILI. As well as creating the DANSILI/Mr Prospector cross (which has given DANSILI Gr.1 winners Zambezi Sun, Zoffany and Proviso), it brings in a line of Riverman, via Distant View's dam-sire Irish River. There have been a further ten DANSILI sired stakes winners from mares carrying a line of Riverman in their pedigrees (within five generations) including RAIL LINK and The Fugue.

Juddmonte's achievements with this DANSILI/Distant View cross are interesting because not only does DANSILI stand at its  Newmarket Banstead Manor base, but Distant View, the 1994 Sussex Stakes winner, stood at Juddmonte's Kentucky Farm until 2006.

From there he sired Distant Music, OBSERVATORY and Sightseek. This allowed Juddmonte to have a number of his daughters within its broodmare band and has led to further success via dual Classic winner Special Duty (by Hennessey), recent Dubai Duty Free (Gr.1) winner Cityscape (by Selkirk and a half-brother to Bated Breath) plus Gr.3 winner Tranquil Tiger (also by Selkirk).

Although Juddmonte has not bred all of the 14 stakes winners produced by Distant View's daughters, the stud's influence has extended to majority of them. Kyllachy's 2010 Nunthorpe Stakes winner, Sole Power, who finished a neck runner-up to Bated Breath in the Temple Stakes, Australian Gr.1 winner Speed Gifted (Montjeu) and Listed winner, Corporal Maddox (Royal Applause) are all out of Juddmonte bred mares.
