THE FUGUE PROMOTED TO OAKS FAVOURITE

Taken from European Bloodstock News 17/5/12:

The Fugue shot to favouritism for the Gr.1 Oaks after a hugely impressive performance in the Gr.3 Musidora Stakes on the first day of York’s Dante meeting.

Ten days on from her fourth in the Gr.1 1000 Guineas and on only her third start, she travelled supremely well under William Buick and was still on the bridle over a furlong out as she challenged the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Twirl (Galileo), who was under hard pressure by Joseph O’Brien. Once Buick asked her to assert, she quickened impressively to win by four and a lengths under just a hand ride.

Explaining the reason for the quick reappearance of the Lord Lloyd Webber-owned filly, her trainer John Gosden said: “I didn’t like bringing her here just ten days after the Guineas, but I felt we had to find out if she was good enough for Epsom. “I always felt she would stay ten furlongs but wasn’t so sure about the rest but William says it won’t be a problem [another two furlongs].

“I just wouldn’t want to see the ground go soft [at Epsom]. If it does she’d revert to the French Oaks but she has a good turn of foot and William felt she’d stay very well. She’s classy and showed it today.”

There is encouragement in her pedigree to suggest she will stay a mile and a half. Her sire, Juddmonte’s DANSILI, has sired Gr.1 winners over that distance in Harbinger, RAIL LINK and Zambezi Sun, and her dam, Twyla Tharp (Sadler’s Wells), was runner-up in the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes in 2005, when the Royal Meeting was moved to York while Ascot was being redeveloped. Further encouragement of The Fugues’s chances of staying can be gleaned from her first foal, the year older SusanStroman, who won twice, albeit at a modest level, over a mile and three quarters and two miles, though she is by more of a stamina influence in Monsun.

Twyla Tharp also raced for the Lloyd Webbers and was bred at their Watership Down Stud in Berkshire. She is a half-sister to two Gr.1 winners in Summoner (Inchinor) and Compton Admiral (Suave Dancer), winners of the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Eclipse Stakes respectively.

Twyla Tharp also has a two-year-old by DANSILI named Ducab.
