HIGH HOPES FOR ZAMINDAR COLTS

ZAMINDAR has one of his largest crops of three-year-olds to race for him this year, and among the interesting prospects are the Aga Khan owned/bred pair Zaidiyn and Zand.

Zaidiyn, trained in France by Mikel Delzangles, won his first and only start as a juvenile last year, and yesterday (11th April) remained unbeaten with an impressive 2½ length victory in the €34,000 Prix de Ferrieres at Longchamp.

The colt "passed all his rivals in the straight with his long stride and won comfortably," according to JDG's French Daily News, and holds entries in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club and the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris.

Zand meanwhile was nominated as the ‘class horse’ in trainer John Oxx’s stable tour in yesterday’s Racing Post, which highlighted the three-year-old colt as having the “potential to make an impact over middle distances.”

Says Oxx: “He looked promising when making all to win a maiden at Leopardstown in October. He wintered well but had an abscess on a foot recently and it was slow to respond to treatment. That ruled out starting him off in the Ballysax Stakes on Sunday (7th April) and we’re hoping that we’ll have him ready for the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown next month.

“He’s entered for the Irish 2000 Guineas and for the Irish Derby."
