Kentucky-bred Lideris stormed up the rail from off the pace and won the Gran Premio Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes e Hipodromos (Per-Gr.1) March 15 at Hipodromo de Monterrico in Lima, Peru.
The first three finishers have raced exclusively in Peru.
Lideris, a 4-year-old son of MIZZEN MAST who was bred by Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, wore down front-running filly Azarenka and runner-up Shakita, who was hard-charging on the outside, in the final 100 meters and won by 1 3/4 lengths.
Final time for the 2,000-meter (about 1 1/4-mile) race on dirt was 2:07.52.
Lideris, ridden by Juan Enriquez for trainer Romulo Herrera V, won his first race at the elite level for owner O. P. Stables. He was a $36,000 purchase by Over the Moon Stables from the Claiborne Farm consignment at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale….
….Azarenka, Peru's Horse of the Year last season and a Kentucky-bred daughter of Street Hero, led off the home turn and held on for third in the 13-horse field.
The winning Dynaformer mare Block is the dam of Lideris, who is from the family of graded stakes winner and sire Boundary.
The Latinoamericano is staged annually at host tracks in nations that are members of the Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes e Hipodromos. Next year's edition of the race will be held at Palermo in Argentina.
