Juddmonte Farms

The Juddmonte Spinster is a Grade 1 race which is traditionally held on the first Sunday of Keeneland’s Fall meet. The 9-furlong contest is for fillies and mares aged three years old and up and is a challenge which takes place on the main track (which has, over the years, been dirt and Polytrack). Juddmonte has sponsored the race since 2005 and participants vie for a chance to win a portion of the $500,000 purse.

The inaugural running of the Spinster took place in 1956 and was won by the previous year’s Champion Two-Year-Old in the U.S., Doubledogdare, a filly who later went on to win the U.S. Champion Three-Year-Old Title. Other notable winners of the illustrious race, one which is now categorized as a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event, securing an automatic entry into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, include:

Hall of Fame Members:
Azeri, Bayakoa, Bowl of Flowers, Gallant Bloom, Inside Information, Paseana, Princess Rooney and Susan’s Girl

U.S. Champion Older Dirt Females/Champion Female Handicap Horses:

An honor roll of that distinction illustrates the elite quality of filly/mare that the Juddmonte Spinster attracts.

The fastest renewal of the Juddmonte Spinster was run in 2008 when Carriage Trail covered the 9 furlongs in a time of 1:46.77 over the synthetic surface.

Prince Khalid won the race in 2013 with homebred Emollient (pictured), her second Gr.1 win over the Keeneland main track as she captured the 2013 Gr.1 Ashland Stakes and the third Gr.1 win of her total career record including four Gr.1 victories.
