Dancing Rain became the second highest-priced mare ever to sell at Tattersalls on Monday (2nd December), when the Oaks winner was sold in foal to FRANKEL for 4 million guineas.

As the star lot on day one of the December Mares Sale, the sales ring was packed full of spectators keen to view the five-year-old – who was the first Oaks winner to be offered at auction carrying her first foal for over 50 years.

The first bid came from agent David Minton at 2 million guineas, and other bidders included Grant Pritchard-Gordon and Pinar Araci before the hammer fell to John Ferguson at 4 million guineas.

Ferguson said: “Sheikh Mohammed has not bought a lot of mares in recent years, but felt that, to use the old phrase, she really did tick all the boxes – she is an Oaks winner from the family of a Derby winner (Dr Devious).

“This game is all about reducing the odds and giving yourself the greatest chance of producing a Classic winner – buying Dancing Rain is a way of reducing those odds.

“You can have lots of mares, but you need the jewels – Sheikh Mohammed felt that she is a jewel. And we haven’t even got to the fact that she is in-foal to FRANKEL!”

Dancing Rain was offered by Liam Norris’s Clairemont Stud. Norris commented: “I’m sorry to see her leave, but she is going to a fantastic home and it’s been an amazing experience.

“We were all really attached to her because she has so much appeal. She took everybody’s eye and it will always be a thrill to think we bought her as a yearling.”

A few lots later, Drops – also in foal to FRANKEL – sold for 750,000 guineas to Charlie Mason of Silfield Bloodstock.

A Kingmambo daughter of the champion racemare Alexandrova, Drops is closely related to Magical Romance, who sold for 4.6 million guineas at Tattersalls in 2006.

Mason said: “I’ve bought her for a client of mine and she will board at our farm. The person in question has other mares with us and horses in training, so the FRANKEL foal will be kept to race.”

Track record breaking sprinter BATED BREATH meanwhile - who like FRANKEL will have his first foals on the ground in 2014 - had 10 mares in foal sell on the opening day of the Mares Sale, at an average of 60,500 guineas and a top price of 160,000 guineas.
