The Roger Varian-trained four-year-old Justineo ran away with the Listed Scarbrough Stakes at Doncaster yesterday. Making all, the son of OASIS DREAM came up the centre of the track in great style, with blinkers reapplied, outclassing his rivals and keeping on well to score by a length and a half from Masamah, who came up the stands side rail to snatch second from Judge ‘N Jury by a head.

Justino was third in the Gr.2 King George at Goodwood on his last appearance and won a conditions event at Newmarket the previous month. He has been placed at Listed level three times in the Stardom Stakes, Wentworth Stakes and Cathedral Stakes, but this, his third career victory having broken his maiden as a two-year-old at Newmarket, was his first Stakes success.

Varian said: “He had a little break after Goodwood. I was just hoping his fitness would last out. He’s a real five furlong horse and he’s going the right way.

“He is in the Prix de l’Abbaye and he could run in that. We know now he’s a very fast horse and that he should cope with whatever conditions prevail in France in early October, so he could be an Abbaye horse. I wouldn’t have thought he’d have another run before that as he’s been on the go since running in Dubai last winter.”

Owned and bred by Saleh Al Homaizi & Imad Al Sagar, he is out of the Listed River Eden Stakes winner Loulwa (Montjeu), a half-sister to the Gr.2 Mill Reef Stakes and Listed Wentworth Stakes winner Galeota (Mujadil), who was also second in the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, and this is the family of the Gr.2 Prix Dollar winner, Gr.1 Champion Stakes runner-up and sire Insatiable (Don’t Forget Me).
