Juddmonte Farms

Taken from European Bloodstock News, 3rd June 2019:

Juddmonte Farms’ homebred Obligate had beaten Pure Zen (Zoffany) by three and a half lengths in last month’s Prix des Lilas L. over 1600m at Chantilly and they met again in yesterday’s Prix de Sandringham Gr.2 over the same course and distance, but on better ground.

Obligate set off in front, followed by Pure Zen and Rocques (Lawman), and was never headed, though she had to pull out all the stops to fend off the sustained challenge of Pure Zen, who closed her down to a head at the line.

The Pascal Bary-trained winner, now unbeaten in three starts, is the latest Group winner by FRANKEL, who has been enjoying a purple patch of late, headed by Friday’s Oaks Gr.1 win by Anapurna and Listed wins eight days ago at Goodwood by both Mirage Dancer and Elarqam. In addition, his daughter Sun Maiden landed a Listed victory at Nottingham later yesterday.

Bary said afterwards: “She’s a filly with a lively action and gives herself generously. Pierre-Charles Boudot made a good job of harnessing her resources up front.

“She isn’t a filly that you argue with and we have adapted to her style accordingly. At Chantilly, horses can often get very wound up but I wasn’t worried. She showed her courage as well as class. Today she had a proper race, a hard race, and we will mull matters over before deciding where to go next.”

Obligate is the first foal out of the OASIS DREAM mare Responsible, whose two-year-old colt and yearling filly are by
the same sire. From a leading Juddmonte family, Responsible is an unraced three-parts-sister to Gr.1 winner Heat Haze and half-sister to DANSILI, Banks Hill, CACIQUE, Champs Elysees and Intercontinental, out of the Kahyasi mare Hasili.
