IMPRESSIVE NEW STAKES WINNER FOR FRANKEL
Homebred filly Franconia earned her first blacktype with a three and three quarter-length victory in the Abingdon Fillies' Stakes Listed race on Saturday (13th June, Newbury).
The three-year-old daughter of FRANKEL was making only her second career start. She travelled strongly throughout the race and took the lead two furlongs out she ran on until eased in the final strides.
Trainer John Gosden said: "She has come here from finishing second at Chelmsford last year so it is all a bit of a jump, but we will see how she takes it all as she is very young in her mind." He continued: "Her sister was pretty lively and she is the same. There is plenty of ability there, we will just see how we play it. You don't normally go from a second at Chelmsford to a Listed. We have just missed those two races prior to anything big. She has plenty of ability, but she is highly-strung."
When asked about her future targets, including the Oaks Gr.1, Gosden said: "The ability is there as her sister Winsili won a Nassau, but we have just got to be sensible how we handle her. I think the Musidora [Gr.3 at York] would be a logical step rather than launching straight into the deep end."
Franconia became FRANKEL's 80th blacktype performer (Northern Hemisphere-bred crops) giving him an incredible 21% blacktype performers to foals of racing age (aged 3YO+).
In addition to Franconia, Saturday saw smart debut wins for two FRANKEL two-year-olds. Knock On Wood, a son of Gr.3 winner Tourny, was the first to score in a newcomers race at Tokyo. He was followed by John Gosden-trained Seventh Kingdom who registered a four-length win in a novice race at Doncaster on the same day.
